Tours

The three IFLA pre-conferences being hosted by the Library of Congress will share a number of tours.

United States Capitol Building

Tuesday, August 9th

Delegates to the IFLA DOCDEL and IFLA P&C pre-conferences will be offered a tour of the Capitol Building on Tuesday, August 9th from 3-4 pm.

The tour will include a movie about the function and structure of the United States Congress as well as an abbreviated tour of the building itself. The walking portion of the tour includes the Crypt, the small Senate rotunda, the Old Supreme Court chamber, and the Capitol Visitor Center Exhibition Hall. In the hall you may see a portion of our National Statuary Collection and will have time to visit the gift shop before returning to your pre-conference.

Wednesday, August 10th

The IFLA PARL pre-conference delegates will be offered a tour of the Capitol Building on Wednesday, August 10th from 2-3 pm as part of their pre-conference program. Delegates do not need to register for this tour.

Library of Congress Collections & Services

Tuesday, August 9th

The Preservation Directorate will offer tours to those who are arriving early to any of the three IFLA preconferences. These will be held at 1-2:30 pm and 3-4:30 pm.

Delegates will see the work performed in four divisions in the Preservation Directorate. They will witness the planning and logistics that need to be in place to handle a large volume of collection items that need to be bound or deacidified in the Binding and Collections Care Division, watch staff working on the Library’s special collections in the Conservation Division, get briefed on new reformatting techniques from Preservation Reformatting Division staff, and learn about the numerous research projects that are performed by Preservation Research and Testing Division staff members. Limit: 20 delegates. This tour will be repeated on Friday, August 12th.

Friday, August 12th

On Friday, August 12th, all three IFLA pre-conferences hosted by the Library of Congress will share tours of Library of Congress’ collections and services. Take advantage of your time at the Library of Congress to learn about the Library’s collections and services, and to establish contacts with LOC librarians and specialists. There will be two sets of tours: the early tours run from 8:30 am – 10:00 am, and the late tours run from 10:30 am – noon. Note that some tours do have attendance limits. You will receive a link to sign up for these tours in the email confirming your registration for the pre-conference.
